Nautical Term: BEI
Definition of BEI
Biological Exposure Indices (BEIs) are quantitative measurements used to characterize the biological effects of chemical exposure in humans. BEIs are used to assess an individual’s cumulative exposure to a specific chemical, based on measurements of the chemical or its metabolites in biological media such as blood or urine. For example, in a research study, BEIs for a group of workers exposed to a certain chemical could be compared to BEIs for a control group to assess the potential health effects of the chemical exposure.
