Nautical Term: Bossingb

Definition of Bossingb

The bossing refers to the hydrodynamically faired outboard portion of the hull plating surrounding and supporting the propeller shafting. In a single-screw vessel, the bossing is an integral part of the centreline skeg.

For instance, during a routine vessel inspection, the inspector may examine the condition of the vessel’s bossing. If the bossing is found to be cracked, pitted or otherwise damaged, the inspector may recommend repair or replacement of the damaged bossing to maintain the structural integrity and efficient operation of the vessel.
