Nautical Term: Hand rope
Definition of Hand rope
A hand rope, also known as a grab rope, is a lengthy and sturdy rope onboard a vessel. It is typically located near the boat’s side, easily accessible for crew members or passengers who need to securely grab onto the boat during rough seas or during embarkation and disembarkation. For instance, during a swift rescue operation, a rescue team may throw a lifebuoy attached to a hand rope into the water for someone to grab onto for safety.
