Nautical Term: Bilges
Definition of Bilges
The bilges of a ship refer to the lowest part of the vessel, situated inside the hull. This area extends from the inner bottom of the ship, which is fitted as the bottom hull limit, up to the maximum depth of the bilge. As an example, during heavy rainfall at sea, water may enter the ship through the scuppers or over the sides. This water may accumulate in the bilges, and it is the responsibility of the crew to pump out the water from the bilges to prevent flooding and ensure the stability and safety of the ship.
