Nautical Term: Bottom, outer

Definition of Bottom, outer

The term ‘outer bottom’ refers to the outermost bottom plating in a double bottom ship. This plating provides an additional layer of protection against damage from the sea floor or other underwater objects.

For example, during a voyage, a cargo ship may accidentally run aground. As a result, the outer bottom plating of the ship may sustain damage from the rough sea floor. In such a situation, the ship’s crew would need to assess the extent of the damage and take appropriate measures to repair the ship and ensure its safe passage to its destination.
