Nautical Term: Shear legs
Definition of Shear legs
Shear legs are typically two or more timbers or spars, arranged in an A-frame shape. The lower ends of the frame are spread out, while the upper ends are fastened together. Lifting tackle is suspended from this structure, which is used for raising and moving heavy weights in situations where a crane or derrick is not available.
For instance, during the construction of a pier, shear legs can be employed to lift and position the heavy pier components.
