Nautical Term: Bounding bar

Definition of Bounding bar

A horizontal structural member, often a steel bar or a series of ribs, that connects the edges of adjacent bulkheads to the tank tops, shells, decks, or another bulkhead. For instance, in the engine room of a cargo ship, bounding bars are used to reinforce the structural integrity of the bulkheads that separate different compartments, such as the engine room, the fuel oil tank room, and the cargo hold.
