Nautical Term: Ratline

Definition of Ratline

:A ratline refers to a short segment of small, horizontal rope, typically made of hemp or manila, that is secured across shrouds on a sailing vessel. Ratlines function as makeshift ladder steps, allowing sailors to ascend the rigging more easily and safely.

:For instance, imagine a sailor named Tom who needs to adjust the sails of his ship during a storm. However, the waves are so high that Tom cannot reach the tops of the masts. In such a situation, Tom can use a ratline as a makeshift ladder step. By securing a small length of horizontal rope across the shrouds, Tom can use it as a stepping stone to ascend the rigging more easily and safely, even during a storm.
