Nautical Term: Bulkhead stiffeners

Definition of Bulkhead stiffeners

Bulkhead stiffeners refer to the beams or girders that are affixed to a bulkhead for the primary function of providing structural support under pressure and maintaining the overall shape of the bulkhead. Most frequently, vertical stiffeners are employed. However, the use of horizontal stiffeners or a combination of both may be considered in certain situations. For example, in a ship’s cargo hold, horizontal stiffeners are often used to support the horizontal floors or stringers that run along the length of the hold. By providing additional structural support in this manner, the use of horizontal stiffeners helps to ensure the overall safety and integrity of the cargo hold and the ship as a whole.
