Nautical Term: Butterworth

Definition of Butterworth

The Butterworth process is a specialized washing technique utilized to gas-free or clean cargo tanks. This washing method employs either hot water or chemicals, which are sprayed evenly through a patented rotating nozzle.

For example, during the transportation of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), cargo tanks must be thoroughly cleansed and gas-free prior to loading and transporting the next cargo. In such a scenario, the Butterworth washing process would be employed to efficiently clean and gas-free the cargo tank, ensuring the safe and reliable transportation of LPG.
