Definition of CALM
Catenary Anchor Leg Mooring refers to a specific type of mooring system for vessels. This system uses a heavy anchor with a long chain attached to it. The other end of the chain is connected to a catenary, which is a flexible curve that distributes the weight of the chain and the vessel evenly. This system allows vessels to be moored in a calm and secure manner, even in rough seas.
For example, during a storm, the captain of a large cargo ship decides to seek refuge in a nearby calm harbor.
