Nautical Term: Cartage

Definition of Cartage

Cartage refers to the transporting of cargo within a port or over a short distance, typically by means of drays or trucks, also known as drayage or intraport hauling.

For example, a shipping company might bring in a large container ship and unload its cargo at the port. Once the cargo has been unloaded and is ready to be transported to its final destination, the shipping company may contract with a local cartage provider to transport the cargo to its next destination, whether that be another port or a distribution center.
