Nautical Term: Collision mat
Definition of Collision mat
A collision mat is a large, protective covering used to seal an opening in a vessel’s side that results from a collision. For instance, if a ship collides with another vessel, the impact may cause a sizeable hole in the first ship’s side. In such a scenario, the crew would quickly deploy the collision mat to cover the opening and prevent water from entering the ship.
