Nautical Term: FREE OUT

Definition of FREE OUT

Free Out refers to the point in a voyage when the owner of a ship is no longer responsible for paying discharge costs related to the unloading of cargo.

For example, in a maritime contract, the owners of a cargo ship may agree to assume all costs related to the loading and unloading of the cargo at the port of call. However, once the cargo has been successfully unloaded and the vessels responsible for the unloading have been paid, the owners of the cargo ship will no longer be liable for any further discharge costs related to the unloading of their cargo.
