Nautical Term: Cradle

Definition of Cradle

A cradle refers to a frame constructed on the ways, or the sloping surface on which a ship is built or repaired. This frame provides support and a secure resting place for the ship while it is being launched.

For instance, during the launching process of a large vessel, the ship is carefully positioned and secured within the cradle. Once all preparations are complete, the ship is gradually moved out of the cradle and into the water. This intricate process ensures the safe and successful launch of the ship.
