Nautical Term: Crew’s gangway
Definition of Crew’s gangway
The Crew’s gangway on an oil tanker is a raised, elevated runway that extends from the poop deck to the midship deck, and further to the forecastle deck. This passageway offers a safe means for crew members to traverse the deck area when the deck is awash with stormy weather.
For instance, during a violent storm, the deck might become submerged in seawater. In such a hazardous situation, the Crew’s gangway provides a secure passageway for the crew members to make their way from one area of the ship to another without putting themselves in grave danger from the stormy weather or the submerged deck.
