Nautical Term: Peak tank

Definition of Peak tank

A peak tank is a fuel storage tank located at the forward and after ends of a vessel. The primary function of peak tanks is to aid in trimming the ship by varying the ballast in the tanks.

For instance, if the after hold of a ship is empty, the vessel would ride so high that the propeller would be partially out of the water, thereby losing much of its efficiency. To counteract this, filling the after peak tank would force the propeller deeper into the water, improving the vessel’s performance and efficiency.
