Definition of Crutches
Crutches refer to supports fitted at the after end of a spar or mast, similar in function to breast hooks but positioned differently. For instance, in the context of setting sails, the use of crutches might be described as follows: ‘To secure the after end of the foretopmast staysail, the sailor employed a crutch. This crutch, fashioned from a sturdy piece of wood, was fitted securely at the after end of the spar. With the crutch in place, the sailor was able to securely attach the after end of the foretopmast staysail to the crutch, ensuring that the sail was properly secured and would not flap in the wind while sailing.
