Definition of Companionway

$ ASSORTMENT OF STEPS OR LADDER DESIGNED TO PROVIDE ACCESS FROM THE SHIP’S LOWER AREAS UP TO THE DECKS ABOVE.

Example: Sailors below deck were scurrying to prepare the ship for battle. The boatswain, keeping watch from the companionway, barked orders to ensure all hands were on deck in time.
