Nautical Term: MDO (DO)

Definition of MDO (DO)

;Marine Diesel Oil (MDO or DO) is a type of fuel oil specifically designed for use in marine diesel engines. It is a distillate fuel, meaning it is derived from crude oil through distillation. MDO is characterized by its relatively low viscosity and its high energy content. It is typically stored and transported in marine fuel tanks and bunker tankers, respectively.;

In the engine room of a large container ship, the chief engineer was overseeing the refueling process. The ship had just completed a long voyage across the Atlantic Ocean and was in need of a fresh supply of Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) to power its main engines. As the bunker tanker slowly transferred the MDO from its tanks into the ship’s fuel tanks, the chief engineer carefully monitored the process to ensure that the ship was receiving the correct quantity and quality of MDO. With the refueling process now complete, the chief engineer could breathe a sigh of relief knowing that his ship was once again fully fueled and ready to embark on its next voyage across the world’s vast oceans.
