Nautical Term: DWAT (or DWT)
Definition of DWAT (or DWT)
Deadweight (DW or DWT) refers to the total weight of a ship’s cargo, stores, and water. This weight is calculated by subtracting the lightship displacement (the weight of the ship when it is empty and ready for sea) from the loaded displacement (the weight of the ship when fully loaded). For example, a cargo ship with a lightship displacement of 10,000 tons and a loaded displacement of 15,000 tons would have a deadweight of 5,000 tons.
