Nautical Term: Hopper barge
Definition of Hopper barge
A hopper barge is a specialized type of barge designed for the transportation of bulk cargo. This type of barge features a single hopper-type hold, which allows for the discharge of cargo through the bottom of the vessel.
For example, a hopper barge might be used to transport large quantities of grain from a farm to a processing plant. The grain would be loaded into the hopper hold of the barge, and then transported downstream to the processing plant. There, the grain would be discharged from the hopper barge through the bottom of the hold, and then conveyed into the processing equipment for further processing.
