Nautical Term: Stringer plate

Definition of Stringer plate

A stringer plate is a fore-and-aft member of deck plating. Its primary function is to strengthen the connection between the beams and the frames. Additionally, stringer plates keep the beams square to the shell, ensuring structural integrity.

For instance, during the construction of a sailboat, the builder notices that the connection between one of the beams and the frame is weak. To address this issue, the builder installs a stringer plate between the beam and the frame, reinforcing the connection and improving the overall structural stability of the boat.
