Nautical Term: Flotsam

Definition of Flotsam

Flotsam refers to the various debris and articles that have been detached from a shipwreck and are now floating on the water surface.

For instance, in the aftermath of a violent storm, the remnants of a destroyed cargo ship, including its wooden hull, metal anchors, and various cargo such as barrels of wine or sacks of grain, all get separated and become part of the flotsam.
