Definition of Fore and aft
Fore and aft refers to a direction that is parallel to a ship’s centerline. In other words, it is the direction that runs from the bow (front) of the ship to its stern (rear).
For example, when a captain wants to adjust the sails on a square-rigged ship, they will give orders based on the ship’s fore and aft direction. The captain might order the crew to give on the fore and aft braces, which would tighten the sails and help the ship sail more efficiently.
