Nautical Term: Foul

Definition of Foul

Foul refers to a situation where a rope, anchor, or any other gear is jammed or entangled, preventing it from functioning properly or clearing a path.

For instance, if a sailor is attempting to raise the anchor, but it’s fouled on a nearby rock or rope, the sailor will need to clear the fouled line or dislodge the anchor from the obstruction before they can successfully raise the anchor.
