Nautical Term: Freeing ports

Definition of Freeing ports

Freeing ports refer to holes or openings in the bulwark or railing of a ship. These Heles allow deck wash and water to drain off into the sea. Some freeing ports are equipped with swing gates. These gates permit water to drain off but automatically close from the pressure of seawater.

Example: During a heavy storm, the crew of a cargo ship was concerned about the accumulation of water on the deck. The ship’s master ordered the crew to open the freeing ports located at the bow and stern of the ship. As the crew opened the freeing ports, the water on the deck began to drain off into the sea, reducing the accumulation of water on the deck.
