Nautical Term: FSS
Definition of FSS
Fire Safety Systems refer to a collection of engineered, interconnected, and activated fire suppression equipment and systems, designed to mitigate or extinguish fires on board a vessel or offshore installation.
For instance, when a fire breaks out in the engine room of an oil tanker, the ship’s fire safety system responds by activating the automatic fire detection and suppression systems. These systems include fixed fire suppression systems, such as inert gas systems and foam-based systems, as well as portable fire suppression equipment, such as fire extinguishers and fire blankets. By utilizing these fire safety systems effectively, the ship’s crew can minimize the damage caused by the fire, prevent further spread of the fire, and ensure the safety of all persons on board the vessel.
