Nautical Term: Gantline

Definition of Gantline

A gantline is a heavy line that is roved through a series of blocks, each secured aloft. The gantline is used to support and secure other lines or equipment on a sailing vessel.

For example, The foretopmast stay sail was set and secured with a jib halyard and the gantline. The gantline, which was roved through the series of blocks secured aloft, was used to secure the halyards and prevent them from chafing against the rigging.
