Definition of Wharf

A wharf is a substantial structure constructed either parallel or perpendicular to the shoreline. Its primary function is to serve as a platform for ships to berth securely for the purpose of loading or discharging goods. For instance, a cargo ship may anchor offshore and transport its goods to a waiting truck on the wharf via a crane or forklift.
