Nautical Term: Shaft coupling
Definition of Shaft coupling
A shaft coupling is a mechanical device used to connect two sections of a rotating shaft. This device typically consists of a flange that is securely attached to the end of each shaft section. The flanges are then joined together by means of bolts.
For example, in a large marine engine, the crankshaft is divided into several sections to facilitate transportation and installation. Each section of the crankshaft is connected to the next section by means of a shaft coupling. This ensures that the rotational motion of the crankshaft is transmitted smoothly and efficiently from one section to the next.
