Nautical Term: GNSS

Definition of GNSS

Global Navigation Satellite Systems, commonly referred to as GNSS, represents a group of satellite-based navigation systems. These systems, which include the United States’ Global Positioning System (GPS), the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), and the European Union’s Galileo system, provide satellite-based positioning, navigation, and timing information to users worldwide.

For example, a boater navigating through the Florida Keys can use a GNSS receiver, such as a handheld GPS device or a built-in GPS system on their boat, to receive real-time satellite-based positioning, navigation, and timing information to help them safely navigate through the waters of the Florida Keys.
