Definition of Gross registered tonnage

Gross registered tonnage (grt)) is a measure of the internal volume of a vessel, calculated using a specific formula. This measure includes the enclosed volume of the vessel, excluding spaces that are not readily measurable or are commonly excluded from the calculation. (Stated in volumetric tons where 1 ton = 100 ft3 , 2.8317 m3.)

Example: The cruise ship Oasis of the Seas has a gross registered tonnage of approximately 225,282 volumetric tons.
