Definition of Gangway

A gangway refers to an opening in the bulwarks of a vessel. This opening serves as a means for persons to come on board of a vessel or disembark from it. In addition to being a passageway for passengers, a gangway can also refer to a gangplank.

For example, The cruise ship finally docked at the harbor. Passengers eagerly made their way to the gangway, where they could disembark and begin their shore excursions.
