Nautical Term: Grounding

Definition of Grounding

Grounding refers to the act of a watercraft coming into contact with the seabed or riverbed. This can occur due to various reasons such as navigational errors, sudden changes in water depth, or extreme weather conditions.

For instance, consider a sailboat sailing in shallow waters near a harbor. Due to a navigational error, the sailboat suddenly runs aground, coming into contact with the seabed. The grounding of the sailboat can result in significant damage to the watercraft, as well as potential harm to the marine environment.
