Nautical Term: Bleeders

Definition of Bleeders

The term ‘Bleeders’ refers to plugs that are screwed into the bottom of a ship while it is in dry dock. These plugs serve the essential purpose of allowing for the drainage of the compartments beneath the ship. For instance, when a ship undergoes routine maintenance in dry dock, the crew will remove the ‘Bleeders’ plugs and allow the compartments to drain completely before returning the plugs to seal the compartments once again.
