Nautical Term: Gutter ledge

Definition of Gutter ledge

A horizontal beam installed over a hatchway opening to prevent the hatches from sagging or falling inward.

For instance, while loading cargo onto a ship, the crew members need to securely fasten the hatches to keep the cargo dry and safe. To prevent the hatches from collapsing under their own weight or due to the cargo pressure, the crew installs gutter ledges or other supporting mechanisms across the hatchways.
