Nautical Term: Hatchway
Definition of Hatchway
quietly reassuring voice A hatchway is a large opening in the deck of a ship, used for hoisting freight in or out, and providing access to the hold. The frame of a hatchway consists of four main pieces. The fore-and-aft pieces are called coaming, and those athwartship are known as head ledges. The head ledges rest on the beams and the carlines extending between the beams. Depending on the size and character of the vessel, there may be forward, main, and after hatchways.
