Nautical Term: Headlog

Definition of Headlog

A headlog, refers to the reinforced, vertical plate that links the bow rake bottom to the rake deck of a barge or a square-stemmed boat. This connection is essential for the structural integrity of the vessel’s bow.

For instance, while underway, the crew of a barge notices a crack in the bow rake. They quickly anchor the barge and inspect the damage. Upon closer examination, they discover that the headlog connecting the bow rake bottom to the rake deck has been compromised. With this knowledge, the crew can begin the process of repairing the headlog and the bow rake to ensure the structural integrity of their barge.
