Nautical Term: MOB

Definition of MOB

Man Overboard (MOB) is a nautical term used to describe a situation where a person falls or jumps into the water from a vessel. The instant a MOB situation occurs, the crew on board must react quickly and efficiently to increase the chances of successfully rescuing the person in the water.

For instance, upon noticing a MOB situation, the captain of the vessel would immediately order the crew to man the rescue equipment such as the life ring, lifeboat, or Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs). The crew would then throw the rescue equipment to the person in the water, while the other crew members use the lifeboat or other means to reach and retrieve the person from the water.
