Definition of Heaving line
—A heaving line is a relatively short and thick line, specifically designed for use as a messenger between vessels or between a vessel and a dock. It is thrown as a floating line, allowing the recipient to easily grab hold of it.—
For example, during the loading and unloading of cargo at a dock, the crew of the ship might need to pass various lines and equipment to the crew on the dock. In such a situation, a heaving line can be used as an effective messenger line, allowing the crews on both sides to safely and efficiently exchange the necessary lines and equipment.
