Nautical Term: Hip towing (hipping)
Definition of Hip towing (hipping)
Hip towing, also known as hipping, is a method of towing where the towed vessel is secured alongside the towboat. This method allows for efficient transfer of cargo or passengers between vessels. For instance, a towboat could tow a large barge to a dock, where the cargo would be transferred to trucks for delivery. Once the cargo transfer is complete, the towboat could then detach the barge and tow it to its next destination.
