Nautical Term: VP

Definition of VP

A Voyage Plan (VP) is an essential document in the maritime world. It outlines a detailed plan for a sailing voyage, including the intended route, timeline, navigation plans, weather contingencies, crew responsibilities, communication plan, and provisions for food, water, and fuel.

For example, suppose a sailing vessel named Seaworthy is planning a voyage from Marblehead, Massachusetts, to Portland, Maine. The Voyage Plan for this voyage would include details such as:

– Intended route: Departing Marblehead Harbor, heading east through Boston Harbor, and then north along the Maine coast, with planned stops at Boothbay Harbor, Damariscotta River, and Rockport before arriving at Portland Harbor.

– Timeline: Estimated departure date from Marblehead, planned arrival date at Portland, and anticipated durations for each leg of the voyage.

– Navigation plans: Detailed descriptions of the charted courses for each leg of the voyage, taking into account local knowledge, tide and current data, and weather forecasts.

– Weather contingencies: Plans for how to adapt to changing weather conditions during the voyage
