Nautical Term: Hopper tank
Definition of Hopper tank
A hopper tank is a lower side ballast tank located in a bulk carrier. This tank is deliberately shaped and positioned to create a hopper form to the cargo hold. By design, the hopper tank gradually slopes downwards towards the cargo hold, allowing the cargo to flow easily into the hold. For instance, during the loading process, bulky cargo such as grains, coal, or ore, can be efficiently and quickly loaded into the cargo hold by making use of the hopper tank’s design.
