Nautical Term: Horning
Definition of Horning
The process of adjusting the frames of a vessel so that they are perpendicular to the keel is referred to as horning. This adjustment must be made after the proper inclination to the vertical has been given due to the declivity of the keel.
Example: During the renovation of the old sailing vessel, the carpenter noticed that the frames were not perpendicular to the keel. He determined that this misalignment was due to the aging of the vessel and the settling of the keel. The carpenter then proceeded to make the necessary adjustments to the frames by horning them so that they were once again perpendicular to the keel.
