Nautical Term: FOW (1)

Definition of FOW (1)

First Open Water (FOW) is a term used in yachting and sailing to describe the first body of water a boat sails in after leaving the confines of a protected harbor or marina.

For example, a sailor might leave the safety of a marina and set sail for the First Open Water beyond the harbor. This is an important milestone for the sailor as they must now navigate in open water and deal with any conditions they may encounter.
