Nautical Term: Hydrostatic test

Definition of Hydrostatic test

A hydrostatic test is a pressure examination that involves the application of a static head of water to various compartments or components of a vessel. For instance, during the construction of a ship, the hydrostatic test is executed to ensure the watertight integrity of the hull. By subjecting the ship to the pressure equivalent to the weight of a column of water, any cracks or weaknesses in the structure will be revealed, allowing the necessary repairs to be carried out before the vessel is put into service.
