Nautical Term: Inerted

Definition of Inerted

The term ‘inerted’ refers to the process of filling a tank with an inert gas, typically nitrogen. This is done to displace any air or other gases that might be present in the tank. The primary reason for inerting a tank is to prevent oxidation or other chemical reactions that could potentially harm the cargo or the tank itself.

For example, a ship carrying vegetable oil may choose to inert the oil tank to prevent oxidation and the formation of off-flavors that could impact the marketability of the cargo.
