Nautical Term: Inner Shell

Definition of Inner Shell

The Inner Shell, also referred to as a plated surface or additional protective layer, is situated inside the main or outer shell plating of a vessel. This inner shell provides an extra protective layer against potential damages, such as those caused by collisions or other accidents.

For instance, in the context of a cargo ship, the inner shell can serve as a storage space for liquid ballast or cargo, as the space between the inner and outer shells is often utilized for such purposes.
