Definition of Abandon ship

In an emergency situation, it is imperative that individuals promptly evacuate the ship and move to a safe location as far away from the vessel as possible.

For example: During a sudden and violent storm at sea, the crew of the sinking ship were instructed to abandon ship and save themselves. The crew quickly evacuated the ship and were successfully rescued by a passing cargo ship.
